Getting To Know FileZilla
A web tutorial
For those of our clients
that maintain their own web sites we highly
recommend FileZilla, a free file transfer program.
Being both free and user friendly we find FileZilla
is the ideal FTP solution for most of our clients.
The first step in
getting to know FileZilla is to download and install
the program on your computer of choice.

Once you have the
program installed open the program using your Start
menu or by simply clicking the quick start icon on
your desktop.
Now that you have the
program installed and running you'll want to connect
to your hosting server. In order to connect to your
host you'll need your web site address (URL) as well
as the user name and password for your hosting
account. Check with your hosting provider if you are
unsure as to what your username and password are.
Once you have the information be sure to keep it in
a secure location as you'll need to refer to it
often when updating your web site.

To connect to your
hosting server simply enter your web site address,
username and password into the fields provided at
the top of the FileZilla window. Complete the
connection by clicking the Quickconnect button.

You will receive a
Directory listing successful confirmation in the
command response screen located directly below the
input fields if the connection is successful. In
addition you'll also notice your web site files and
folders will appear on the right hand side of the
screen further confirming your connection to the
hosting server.
If you are unable to
connect to your hosting server check that the username and password you have are correct and are
associated with the domain you are attempting to
connect to.

Once you are connected
you can begin uploading your files and images using
the FileZilla interface. To upload files use the
navigation window located in the lower left of your
window to navigate to the location on your computer
where your web site files are stored.

Once you've located the
file(s) to be uploaded simply right click the file
and select Upload from the menu that appears.
You'll notice the file will move into the queue
temporarily until it has uploaded successfully.
You can confirm the
successful upload of your file(s) by navigating to
the page in your web browser, taking care to refresh
the page and confirming your updates visually.
